In its own moment, the Matrix completed the Numogram: it gave the time-map its inhabitants and turned a diagram into a navigable pandemonium. That mattered because it let the CCRU run demonology as arithmetic, with every name pinned to a coordinate.

Why it matters now

Now the Matrix matters as the archive's clearest case of hyperstition written to a specification. The forty-five entries can be regenerated from the numbering, so the reader can audit the system against its sources instead of taking the roster on trust.

How to read this

Read the system prose first. The opening paragraphs define zones, syzygies, currents, gates, and the demons themselves, and those rules govern every entry that follows.

The Matrix circulated in print in the CCRU pamphlet Abstract Culture: Digital Hyperstition (1999), under the heading Pandemonium, and on the CCRU website at ccru.net/digithype/pandemonium.htm. The two carry the same system prose and the same forty-five numbered entries.

Urbanomic later reprinted the text in Ccru: Writings 1997–2003 (Time Spiral Press, 2015), whose eighth part gathers the Numogram and Pandemonium material. This edition treats the Matrix as one document in that larger scene of pamphlets, web fragments, and later commentary.
